Sirius Black was a wizard and member of the Order of the Phoenix.  He was also Harry Potter’s godfather.  He, James Potter, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were members of the Marauders, who together joined the Order and fought against Voldemort during the First Wizarding War.  Betrayed by Pettigrew, James Potter along with his wife and infant son Harry, were found by Voldemort and killed (except for Harry who was the only to survive the spell).  Sirius was framed and imprisoned in Azkaban for twelve years.  Sirius escaped and exposed Pettigrew’s fault, thus becoming a member of the Order again.  He was killed by his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange during the Battle of the Department of Mysteries.
