Ninja Caltrops

September 21, 2008

Ninja Caltrops“Caltrops” are a common weapon used by Ninja warriors.

A caltrop (calthrop, jack rock, star nail or crow’s foot) is a weapon made up of two (or more) sharp nails or spines arranged in such a manner that one of them always points upward from a stable base (for example, a tetrahedron).

According to many, they may be thought of as the landmines of antiquity useful to shape the battlefield and force the enemy into certain paths and approaches, or to provide a passive defense as part of a defensive works system. At the time, Caltrops served to slow down the advance of horses, war elephants, and human troops. It was said to be particularly effective against the soft feet of camels. In more modern times, caltrops are used against wheeled vehicles with pneumatic tires.

The derivation of the modern name “caltrop” is uncertain, but the Latin Tribulus is clearly derivative of the plant sharing similar hazards to sandaled or bare feet the Tribulus terrestris (Zygophyllaceae), whose spiked seed case can also injure feet and puncture tires. It can also be compared to the Star thistle, Centaurea calcitrapa, whose Latin name calcitrapa means “foot trap”.

Sword Cleaning Kit

Deluxe Sword Cleaning Kit

Swords, knives and other bladed weapons are often susceptible to rust. To keep your sword looking as good as possible you will want to use a cleaning kit.

Basic Kits Usually Includes:

  • Brass Awl and Hammer to easily dismantle your sword
  • Bottle of Choji Oil to prevent rusting
  • Rice Paper to apply the Oil
  • Plastic Container to store the oiled cloths
  • Extra Large Uchiko which contains non-abrasive powder to absorb any excess cleaning oil

Cleaning your sword

Before you begin cleaning your sword remember that the blade is sharp! Make sure you are never in a position the could lead to injury.

Cleaning the Scabbard

A scabbard is a sheath for holding a sword or other large blade. Scabbards have been made of many materials over the millennia, including leather, wood, and metals such as brass or steel. Usually the scabbard just needs to be wiped off occasionally. Be careful not to dull the finish. Use a clean cloth, hold the wrapped section, and gently wipe the Scabbard.

Cleaning the Blade

First wipe off the previous maintenance using rice paper or a very soft cloth if you don’t have any. Next you will want to take your powder ball and tap it along the blade every 2-3 inches. After completing this you will want to use a clean piece of rice paper to rub the powder on the blade to polish it. Before you touch the blade with your hands or return it to it’s sheath, place a few drops of oil on each side of the blade and wipe with a clean piece of rice paper.

Happy Sword Cleaning!
