Zatoichi: Sword of the Blind Swordsman
January 29, 2009
Zatoichi is a well known fictional character of Japan from the Edo period (during the 1800’s). Upon first impression he seems to be an innocent, blind traveler, wandering around the country showing his musical ability, performing acupuncture, and showing off his superb swordsmanship skills, especially that of iaido. He carries a cane sword (because blades were banned during this period) that was specially made for him. Despite his calm, quiet characteristics, he actually can be quite fierce when faced with his foes. Known for his protection over the innocent, Zatoichi is an incredible fighter and a fearsome opponent.
The shikomizue (which literally means “prepared cane”) is functional and comes with a fully sharpened carbon steel blade! So you can use your skills to take down samurai and yakuza just like the film hero! Its blade features grooves on one side of its handle for orientation and the red scabbard and handle are highly lacquered. It also includes a custom wooden sword box with engraving and a cloth sword bag!
This Zatoichi Sword of the Blind Swordsman (red) sword can be an extravagant addition to your Hadmade Swords, Movie Swords, or Asian Swords collection!

Ohayocon in Columbus this weekend
Show off your cosplay this weekend at Ohayocon 2009! Beginning on Friday and not ending until Sunday, this 24 hour convention will press on!
Why come to Ohayocon? The gaming rooms are open 24 hours/day throughout the event! What better reason than that? Games like Halo 3, Soul Calibur IV, Bleach Blade Battlers 2nd, and more will be available for your gaming pleasure! You can also show off your rhythm with games like DDR and Rock Band 2!
Other convincing arguments to come are their signature events like the Pajama Jam!, Cosplay Masquerade, Lindsay Howard Mascot Contest, and Ohayocon Anime University.
Door registration is open. See details here by clicking on the “Registration” tab.
Oh, and just for the record, “Ohayo” was decided on for the event’s name because of (the obvious) the state’s name “Ohio” and (the not so obvious) the word “Ohayo” which means “good morning” in Japanese.

Vericon is holding its 9th convention this weekend. This Harvard-based event has a focus on science-fiction, anime, fantasy, and gaming. Get out this weekend and join in the festivities.
You can play video games until your thumbs are impaired to the point of not being able to pick up your drink this weekend. A very interesting twist to the game Capture-the-Flag will be held as well as several readings and book signings. Or why not discover the things you can do with sheep, stone, brick, and wood with one of my personal favorite games, Settlers of Catan for two hours on Friday evening?
This year’s guest of honor is science fiction writer, Kim Stanley Robinson. Other guests to attend are Elizabeth Bear, Robert V.S. Redick, Brad Guigar, and a few more.

Phoenix Comicon 2009 - The Signature Pop Culture Convention of the Southwest
Phoenix Comicon starts today! With events like Return of the Jedi Training Academy and the Imperial Stormtrooper Boot Camp, dances and parties, the event is going to be phenomenal. Lasting from today until Sunday, even the busiest of folk should be able to squeeze in a little time to stop in and check things out!
The preparers have lots of fun ideas planned for this year’s event. From Anime Programming events such as Your Anime Sucks or You are NOT your Anime Character, one can laugh the night away at the expense of others (in a kind way, of course)! If your focus is more toward the Comic Programming of the convention, there will be a Toy Auction as well as an exciting Southwest Quick Draw Sketch-Off! Some pieces will be given away to attendees but the favorite will be entered into the Saturday night Art Auction!
A plethora of guests are lined up as well. Some include: Andy Kuh, AZ Ghostbusters, Guy Nuesca, Kitsune Robot, Panda Cubed, and the Hurricane Kids.
