Secretly The Best Movie Ever: Karate Kid II

It’s easy to throw all the Karate Kid movies into one category: cheesy nostalgia films with no real substance. I vehemently disagree. Karate Kid II specifically, is in my opinion one of the best films of the ‘80s. Isn’t it weird, how sequels can sometimes surpass the original in both cinematography and plot? Think about it. Back To The Future II? Way better than the first. Though the first one does hold a special place in my heart, the second is my absolute favorite of the series. But back to Karate Kid II. It is visually stunning. The scenes set in Okinawa especially have a certain simple beauty, not to mention the final battle in those ruins… I mean, come on… you have to admit it was really well done. And that hurricane sequence? Intense. Really good acting from the bad guy, by the way. Remember him? Boy, he was a looker…

But what..a..jerk..

With an awesome ‘80s soundtrack to match, this movie is the perfect representation of that ‘80s “go get ‘em” attitude. When movies were unrealistically up beat, and we loved it! You always knew the underdog would win, no matter how high the odds were stacked up against him. The skinny unlikely hero always steps up in the end, leaving you in tears of joy. (Yes, I always cry… it’s just so good!)

Relive all your favorite Karate Kid moments with these products from Heavenly Swords. Now you can train like Daniel-San and kick that blonde guy’s butt.

And yes, I know that’s from the first one. All you need now is one of those little drum things you slide between your palms… you know what I’m talking about.

Foam Padded Dragon Nunchaku Karate Practice

The biggest mistake you can make is training with real nunchucks. These are padded with foam, so you don’t have to suffer the bruises of learning with real metal and wood ones.

Stainless Steel All Metal Nunchaku

Once you know what you’re doing you can move on to these beauties. Any challenger will be both impressed and intimidated when they see you handle these gleaming nunchucks with ease. They’re made of stainless steel with an overall length of 29”.

Extreme Black Shinobi Throwing Star Set of 4

Ok, so Daniel-San doesn’t really use these, but anyone interested in Martial Arts weapons knows that ninja stars are a must-have! This is a set of four different styles, made of black anodized steel and come with a nylon pouch and belt loop.

Wooden Training Dummy

A valuable investment for someone who wants to truly be a ninja. It is made of 100% hardwood. It is not only an important training tool, but will look awesome in your man cave. Practice your moves with this iconic training tool.

The Karate Kid films have sustained various reincarnations. Think 1994’s The Next Karate Kid, with Hilary Swank (admittedly, not her best work), or the slightly better, yet totally manufactured 2010 remake with Will Smith’s son. I understand why movie studios want to recapture the magic we all love, but these movies are classics for a reason! We should start a campaign against remakes… it just makes me sad.

Naruto: Weapons Galore!

Naruto first burst into the manga scene in 1997. From there it grew into an anime series of 220 episodes. The animated series debuted in Japan in 2002, and slowly made its way to the Americas, gaining loads and loads of fans in the meantime. It’s become one of the best selling manga series, selling over 126 million copies in Japan alone. Yes, I looked it up on wikipedia.

I mean, the series is awesome. The writers and illustrators have created an intricate and complex world. One that is unique yet relatable, where its characters fight enemies, both external and internal, and struggle to achieve their dreams. All of this set in a fantastic landscape. It’s funny, poignant, heartbreaking and just… really engaging.

The main character is Naruto Uzumaki. Twelve years before we begin our journey with him, a terrifying creature called The Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attacked his village. To defeat this demon, the village leader sealed this monster inside the body of a newborn boy. This boy was Naruto.

Naruto was abused and mistreated his entire childhood because of this, unbeknownst to him. But he is determined to become the village leader someday, so he leaves his home to train to become a ninja. There’s so much more to the story, but I honestly don’t think I’d do it justice. You gotta watch it! You can catch it all on Adult Swim, or online at anytime.

Take your Naruto fandom to the next level with these awesome replicas. We have lots of weapons from the series available. Here are just a few:

Red Kunai Warrior Set

Perfectly balanced, this three piece set is made of stainless steel and comes with a durable nylon sheath. Nice and compact, each kunai is about 5 inches long.

Kunai Uzumaki Naruto Manga Set of 3 Throwing Knives

These are just a little bit more hardcore. They’re 6 1/2″ long, super sharp black stainless steel and the handle is wrapped in black nylon. Careful, these are battle ready.

Zabuza Sword and Stand

Become a true Japanese warrior with this massive piece of weaponry. It is 40” long with a 29” stainless steel blade. It comes with a free wood stand, so you can display it with pride. Careful, this is a formidable sword.

Musha Sasuke Uchiha Naruto Anime Sword

Streamlined and gorgeous, you don’t need to be a Naruto fan to appreciate the simple beauty of this item. It has a 27” two-toned carbon steel blade. It is 38” overall with a white wooden handle and matching scabbard. It has a single black stripe running the length of the scabbard and handle, and a red ninja symbol.

Naruto Shippuden Ninja Trench Knife

This super sharp little knife may only be about 9” long, but it has lots of power. It has a stainless steel trailing point blade, and white cotton wrapping around the knuckle guards. Sleek and effective, this knife is indispensable for any ninja warrior. It includes a sturdy sheath and a belt loop.

2013 Bay Area Renaissance Festival

Florida folks! The Bay Area Renaissance Festival is well underway every weekend until April 7th. Going strong since 1979, this year promises to be the biggest festival yet. It is the largest costumed festival in Tampa, and it’s chock-full of fun activities for grown-ups and kids alike.

Well known for its themed weekends, this festival right on schedule to celebrate St. Patrick’s day. Come check it out this weekend while they celebrate “Shamrocks & Shenanigans!” It is the largest St. Paddy’s day party in Tampa, complete with a “Men in Kilts” contest… should be interesting to say the least… FREE beer tasting, Irish Heavy Games, and their very own Celtic Village, this weekend is a must-see!

All that in addition to the other traditional Renaissance fest accoutrements, like jousting, arts and crafts, acrobats, daily high tea with the Queen herself, and medieval market place. You could even have brunch with King Henry on Easter Sunday! The menu includes all kinds of yummy things, and mango mimosas… wink, wink. Yum.

This particular festival is special in that they have real-live mermaids! They swim around in a ginormous tank, and will even wave at you as you walk by. They might even take a picture with you, if you ask nicely.

Admission is $18.95 at the door for adults, $10.95 for kids ages 5-12. Kids under 4 years old enter free. Members of the military get free admission Friday, March 22nd. Mark your calendars! They are open from 10 am-6 pm rain or shine. Check out their website for directions.

They do have a weapon’s policy, which I read. They allow longbows, as long as they are not strung. Swords, knives, dirks and daggers are allowed, but must be completely sheathed and peace-tied. No axes or blunt weapons. Here are a few cool weapons with sheaths and some armor to complete your costume for the festival.

Masonic Short Sword

Turn some heads with this beautifully detailed sword. The handle alone is gasp-worthy. It is 20” long and the handle has a silver finish. Just, so pretty.

Leather Arm Guards

Metal armor might be too much for the Florida heat, but these leather arm guards will complete your Medieval outlaw look with ease. A black cotton shirt, a sword around your waist, or a bow strapped to your back, and you’re looking pretty good.

Blue Medieval Crusader Knight Dragon Foam Shield

This shield is light enough to get carried around all day, but detailed enough to get some attention. Perfect for the festival. Also really good for kids who want to dress up too!

A Renaissance Festival is fun whether or not you wear a costume. But getting dressed up adds to the fantasy of it all, it immerses you in the experience. Keeps the scene going, if you will. Nothing can take you out of the moment faster than looking down at your Metallica t-shirt while watching a jousting match. Enjoy the fair!

Movies With Swords: 300

“This is Sparta!”

The 2006 action film has left those words imprinted in the brain of anyone who saw it. A visual masterpiece, the film was shot with a “super-imposition chroma key” technique. Don’t ask me what that means, I just know it looked really cool. The movie is based on the critically acclaimed 1998 comic by Frank Miller. The artwork of the comic was so stunningly integral to the story, that the film makers had to adopt a similar look to mimic the environment these soldiers were in. I don’t think this film would’ve worked without it.

The story is narrated by a soldier named Dilios. He tells us what happened from his perspective, and creates a world where fantasy and fact become intertwined. He tells the legend, not the history, and we eat it up.

Dilios tells the story of Leonidas, from the encounter with a wolf that made him a man, to his becoming king of Sparta. When prompted by a messenger to submit to Xerxes, the kind of Persia, Leonidas kicks him into a bottomless hole. This of course, would lead to war… the rest is history. Literally.

Both the comic and the movie were based on the writings of Herodotus, widely regarded as one of the first historians in Western literature. His writings were put together into a book called “The Histories”, and they serve as a record of ancient traditions, politics and important events of the Mediterranean. It chronicles the rise of the Persian Empire, and tells a detailed account of the Battle of Thermopylae, where the real story took place.

The bottom line is, there once was an actual King Leonidas, and he really did battle an army of about 800,000 Persians with only about 300 men. In reality they lost, but his courage and sacrifice lived on. It lived on so long, that Gerard Butler depicted him in a movie almost 2,500 years later… Now that is fame. Not only that, but the tactics he used to fight the Persians are still used in battle today. How awesome is that?

So if you want to honor King Leonidas too, Heavenly Swords has a whole lot of Spartan stuff to help you!
