The Matrix: A Sci Fi Revolution

After learning a little bit of American history yesterday, today we’re gonna talk about yet another Sci Fi movie that forever changed the way movies are made: The Matrix! Free your mind.

This movie came out in 1999, when we were all a little worried about Y2K… remember that? The fear that all computers would crap out on us at the turn of the century? Silly times… But anyway, this movie was unlike anything we’d ever seen on screen. Not only was the story revolutionary, but the methods used for filming it were replicated in pretty much every action film that followed. To this day, that bullet dodging sequence, and that 360 spin around a character are used in everything from action films, to comedies… We all know what it is, and it’s become an overused and predictable device to depict a suspenseful moment. Back in 1999 though, it had never-ever been done, and it left us all open-mouthed and drooling at the theater.

The story is complicated but eerily plausible. We follow Neo, a reclusive computer hacker as he comes to realize that the world as he knows it — is an illusion, and robots have taken over the planet and now use humans as their fuel… Whaaat?! Kinda hits home, doesn’t it… ‘cuz aren’t we all just a little worried about robots acquiring consciousness and taking over the world? It’s as ubiquitous as the fear of a zombie apocalypse, but we can talk about that another day.

So anyway, the robots have created this imaginary world, known as The Matrix, and have connected all the human brains to it, kind of like a neverending dream. As the humans dream, they are comatose in individual vessels of pink goo, where they are fed intravenously through tubes connected to their body. Creepy as hell.

The movie moves well, it keeps you engaged and wowing away for its duration. And even 14 years later, the special effects stand up to any movie made today. It’s truly a masterpiece, and if you haven’t seen it yet: first of all, What the hell is wrong with you? and second of all… go NOW.

Also, the sequels kinda aren’t as good as the first… but I would advise to watch them anyway. Follow it through to the end, my friend… even if it has one of the most frustrating, hair-pulling endings of any franchise in history, you should still see it… or maybe not… I don’t know, you choose. I can’t tell you what to do.

The weapons used in this movie are EPIC. From all the kung fu awesomeness, to the crazy guns I can’t describe ‘cuz I know nothing about assault weapons. However, Heavenly Swords can help you out with various blades I think would’ve fit right in with rest in this film. Especially in the second one, there’s some pretty badass katanas going on… so I’ve picked out some weapons I think Neo and Trinity would’ve loved. They would definitely come in handy when fighting Agent Smith.

Emperor Kang-Si Sword

This majestic sword is 31” overall, with a 440 stainless steel blade measuring 20”. Thick and substantial, it makes a daring display, and Neo would love it!

Reaper Curved Battle Blade

Measuring 19″ overall, this sword has a stainless steel, double-edged blade with a silver finish. Impressive and beautiful! It comes with a sheath.

Bangkok Battle Set

Oh my! Any warrior carrying these weapons on his back will look amazing. These twin blades come super sharp, and the nylon sheath helps you carry them on your back, for a unique and effective way to carry your weapons.

Extreme Curve Custom Handmade Katana w/ Red Pendant

This guy is handmade and amazing. It comes with a super sharp 1045 high carbon steel blade. It has a dramatic curve, and is completely functional and battle ready.

Kill Bill: Swords For Everyone

Few movies capture the violent beauty of a good martial arts film like Kill Bill does. Much less with a bunch of fierce female assassins. Kill Bill was released in two parts, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. It’s a mad thrill ride by Quentin Tarantino, where we follow Beatrix Kiddo (aka The Bride, aka Black Mamba) as she seeks revenge on the group of fellow assassins who tried to kill her and her unborn child. We watch as she slices through dozens of people with her trusty Hattori Hanzo sword, which the man forged especially for her. Especially so she could seek revenge on the infamous Bill.

She makes a list of all the people responsible for her tragedy. One by one she finds them, and kills them. With stellar performances from not only Uma Thurman, but Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah and David Carradine himself, this film was an instant classic. Tarantino drew inspiration from action films he loved as a child, referencing such classics as Game of Death, the 1978 Bruce Lee movie, Once Upon A Time In The West (1968), Lady Snowblood (1973), and Fists of Fury, another Bruce Lee classic of 1972. For a really cool montage go here. All those movies are awesome and worth watching on their own.

Quentin Tarantino created a masterpiece, seamlessly blending together several genres and decades of cinema into one cohesive and undeniably engaging piece. The weapons created for the film were unforgettable, and you can have your very own collection. Now you can be ready in case the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad ever comes looking for you. Here are just a few:

Kill Bill Bride Sword Full Tang Battle Ready

The true star of the the entire film, this sword was at the very least Uma Thurman’s costar. Without it the movie wouldn’t have been the same, and now you can have your very own battle ready Hattori Hanzo sword. It is 40” long, with a lacquered hardwood scabbard and a table stand, for easy display.

Kill Bill 2 – O-ren Ishii Samurai Katana

In the most memorable fight sequence of the decade, Uma Thurman sliced through Oren Ishii’s gang, the Crazy 88, just to have a chance at hand to hand combat with Oren Ishii herself. Now you can own her iconic sword. This unique piece is beautiful, and deadly.

Musashi Kill Bill Budd’s Sword 38 3/4″

The man who buried Black Mamba alive owned one of the last Hattori Hanzo swords ever crafted. Now you can have this exact replica, complete with the engraving Bill left. It states, “To My Brother Budd, The Only Man I Ever Loved -Bill” It comes extra sharp and is over 38” in length.

Kill Bill – Handmade Bills Sword

This is a hand forged replica blade is crafted from the finest quality 1045 carbon steel and measures 41” overall. Fashioned after the movie original, this sword comes with its own black cotton sword bag and black lacquer sword stand so you can display it proudly, the way Bill would.

The Last Samurai: Swords Beyond Time

The first thing I picture when talking about The Last Samurai is the final scene, the cherry blossoms shaking in the wind as the film comes to its heartbreaking conclusion. I won’t tell you, in case you’ve never seen it. There’s nothing I despise more than a spoiler, and I’m no spoilsport, so you’ll have to watch it to find out what I mean.

If you did see it, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This film is ranked as one of the top 10 samurai films ever made by japancinema.net. Not an easy feat by an American film. In fact, it’s the only American made film on the list.

The story follows Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a tortured Civil War veteran hired by the Emperor of Japan to train peasants in modern warfare. By that I mean, like… guns. As in, out with the old, which poses a problem for the Samurai, who are super attached to their traditions (understandably so), yet wish to remain loyal to the Empire. Conflict? You got it.

The story really gets going when Algren is nursed back to health by the Samurai leader Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) after a skirmish between the Samurai and Algren’s ill-trained soldiers. Extremely well written, the direction and acting on the parts of Cruise and Watanabe are superb. The depiction of common Japanese life in the 1870s is not only accurate, but beautifully portrayed. The fight scenes are simply shot, allowing the viewer to really experience the battles as if they were a spectator.

What else can I say? The movie is really really good. And it so makes me want to go to the backyard and practice with my katanas. After you watch it, you will too. Here are a few possibilities for your collection:

Demigod Katana

This sword is a gorgeous representation of the weapons used by the Samurai. It is 42” long with a 30” blade. It features a hand forged blade, made of high quality carbon steel. The saya is a black lacquered wood, beautiful! It comes with a cleaning kit, and a sword bag, so you can keep it in pristine condition.

Dragon Katana

This is another beautiful example of a sword a Samurai might carry. It is simple in its beauty, but truly packs a punch. The saya has a beautiful dragon detail, perfect for display. It is 39”, with a 27” stainless steel blade, and a cord-wrapped handle for easy gripping.

Masahiro Black Cherry Blossom Katana

Honor Katsumoto’s legacy with this assemble-yourself piece. If you want to really get the full katana experience, assembling the sword yourself connects you to the weapon in a way no pre-assembled item can. It has gorgeous cherry blossoms engraved in the guard. It has a 28 inch high carbon steel blade. It is handmade and extremely sharp, so be careful! It can slice through wire without damaging the blade!

Wanna Be a Samurai?

Anyone who’s ever seen a samurai film spends the rest of the night lying in bed, wishing for their very own samurai sword. We’ve all had dreams where we’re limber ninjas, jumping from roof to roof, sliding undetected behind an unsuspecting target. I mean, that’s the dream, isn’t it? A life of danger and excitement? Then we wake up and simply wobble to the bathroom to start our day.

We sit in our cubicle or desk, daydreaming about slicing through Oren Ishii’s gang, The Crazy 88, like Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino’s incredible film Kill Bill. We think back to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and wonder if maybe we trained really hard, perhaps we could hop on bamboo stalks like they did. We imagine decapitating hordes of zombies with our katanas, like that lady on The Walking Dead. No? Just me? Oh…

Let’s face it, every good action film has a samurai sword in there somewhere. They are used as sophisticated and stylish weapons against everything from vampires, to zombies, to enemies against whom we seek revenge. Pretty much any evil, undead, corrupt, oppressive, bad thing out there. And with good reason! They’re awesome.

What if I said there’s a place where you can get the katana of your dreams? A place where they not only sell beautiful display pieces, but battle-ready, handmade amazingness that will surely come in handy when the zombies finally attack. This place exists, and you’re reading its blog right now.

Heavenly Swords has dozens of gorgeous swords for anyone looking to start, or expand their collection. With new products coming in every day, you are guaranteed to find what you’re looking for. Here are a few of my favorites:

Dragon Guardian Samurai Sword w/ White Ito

The intricate dragon detail on the handle is what got my attention. This beauty is 41” long, with a battle ready blade made form 1045 carbon steel. Those zombies are going down!

Gold Jintachi Japanese Samurai Swords

This one is perfect for someone just starting a collection. It’s not only a stunning showpiece, but it comes equipped with a 26” stainless steel blade. The scabbard, or saya, has a gold plated finish, and the handle features a gorgeous antiqued detail.

Gold Spiral Dragon Katana

What put this sword over the top for me are the 7” stiletto and the 7 ½” knife that fit neatly into the scabbard. So you have extra protection if you need to fight off multiple undead at once. The red snakeskin-style handle matches the red scabbard… just so pretty.

Musha Hand Hond Razor Sharp Samurai Sword Set with Stand

For those of us who do not play games. This is a hand forged, razor sharp sword set. Each blade is made of 1045 carbon steel glimmering in the sunlight, my friend. The hard, deep blue scabbard has a lacquered high gloss finish, and the stand compliments it beautifully. Display these in a prominent place, and know you’ll always have some deadly weapons ready if you ever need to defend yourself against The Crazy 88.

What To Buy Those Who Play It All

For those of us with gamers in the family, it can be difficult to find appropriate gifts. Not being a gamer myself, I’m often stumped when it comes to shopping for my fellow gamer friends.

Though I thoroughly enjoy watching them kill zombies, traversing through harsh terrain, or finding whatever item they’re questing for (it’s like a movie to me, happening in real time), the gaming bug has yet to bite me. So when it’s time to get birthday and Christmas presents, I end up having to go on a dangerous quest of my own.

Luckily for you and me, Heavenly Swords carries a few great gifts that would make the gamer in your life squeal. Yes, actually squeal like a school girl. It’s a sight to see…

God of War – Twin Blades of Chaos

My friend Dave LOVES God of War. He would flip-out if he opened a gift box to find this inside. They are to Twin Blades of Chaos, the chosen weapon of Kratos, the God of War himself. Or rather, they chose him:

“The Blades of Chaos, forged in the foulest depths of Hades. Once attached the blades remained so, chained and seared to the flesh, a part of the bearer’s body…”

Crazy stuff. This pair has stainless steel blades with cast aluminum guard and pommel. A steel chain binds them together. It comes with a custom wood display plaque, so they can be mounted on the wall with pride.

Ninja Gaiden Katana Sword

Ninja Gaiden first started as an arcade game in 1988. It has been gaining fans ever since. This revolutionary game was the first console game to have the story presented in cinematic cutscenes. A true pioneer, and a timeless classic. Any serious gamer would completely appreciate you getting them such a meaningful gift. This sword is 41”, and the gold detailing really make it a unique and beautiful piece.

Legend of Zelda – Mini Princess Replica Sword with Shield Display 17″

Everyone who’s ever heard of video games in general, knows about Zelda. This classic game has a lot of history, guaranteeing a squeal from anyone who receives this detailed replica. The front bears the Hylian Royal Family Crest, and the Triforce symbol. Link, the hero of the game, used a Hylian shield when he was a child. The swords are each 17”, making for a beautiful wall display.

Prince Of Persia Dagger 16″

The Prince of Persia game was first created and released for the Apple II computer in 1989. A later reincarnation, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time came out in 2003, which inspired the film released in 2010. The game has endured the test of time, and this finely crafted piece of memorabilia will too. This stunning dagger is 16” and comes with a wood stand, so it can be displayed by the owner.

So there you have it. There’s nothing more thrilling than watching fantasy come to life. With these gifts, you can give the gamer you love a little slice of what they see on the screen every day.
