Crazy Awesome Movies: The Last Dragon

A martial arts fantasy musical… what?! Yes. It’s been done, and it is glorious. If you’re standing there perplexed, smooth out that frown, ‘cuz today we’re talking about The Last Dragon. Sho’nuff!

The Last Dragon is a freakin’ masterpiece. It has everything, a noble hero, a beautiful songstress in distress, a crazy hilarious villain, piranhas, big ‘80s hair, and an awesome musical number at the end where everyone is dressed in white tuxedos. You can’t make this stuff up.

This film was released in 1985, and hasn’t left my consciousness from the moment I saw it. It follows Leroy, a devoted martial artist, who worships Bruce Lee (who doesn’t?) and dreams of one day achieving the ultimate mastery of martial arts, otherwise known as “The Glow”.

He must defeat the Shogun of Harlem, a hilariously memorable character called Sho’nuff.

There’s all kinds of weirdness in this movie, but my favorite part is when he finally catches a bullet with his teeth in the climactic scene. You must watch this movie. NOW. Your life will never be the same.

After you watch it, and your hope for mankind is likely restored, you’ll probably want to train just like Leroy. In case Sho’nuff should show up at your local movie theater. Here’s some pretty amazing gear from Heavenly Swords to quench your thirst for ninja mastery. Leroy would be so proud:

Covert Double Trouble Ninja Sword Set

These swords are not only beautifully unique, but they will cut through almost anything. They come super sharp, and look great prominently displayed anywhere. Let Sho’nuff know who’s the true Master with these swords!

Dual Rainbow Blade Full Tang Ninja Swords

Talk about “the glow”. These swords bring ninja weapons to a whole new level. They are functional showpieces that come fully sharpened, so you can leave your friends speechless when you demonstrate their power. Use responsibly, of course.

Kuma Claw and throwing star

This claw has Sho’nuff written all over it. I imagine he would’ve loved showing up somewhere wearing it, and scaring the bejeesus out of anyone who got in his way. “Who’s the prettiest? Sho’nuff!”

Sidenote: There’s been a lot of talk on the interwebs about doing a remake of this film. Why?! Please, do not remake this movie. You can’t recreate the magical camp that is this classic. It is a journey to a mystical world… it’s ridiculous, and silly, and just plain perfect. You wouldn’t repaint a Van Gogh, would you?

Kill Bill: Swords For Everyone

Few movies capture the violent beauty of a good martial arts film like Kill Bill does. Much less with a bunch of fierce female assassins. Kill Bill was released in two parts, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. It’s a mad thrill ride by Quentin Tarantino, where we follow Beatrix Kiddo (aka The Bride, aka Black Mamba) as she seeks revenge on the group of fellow assassins who tried to kill her and her unborn child. We watch as she slices through dozens of people with her trusty Hattori Hanzo sword, which the man forged especially for her. Especially so she could seek revenge on the infamous Bill.

She makes a list of all the people responsible for her tragedy. One by one she finds them, and kills them. With stellar performances from not only Uma Thurman, but Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox, Daryl Hannah and David Carradine himself, this film was an instant classic. Tarantino drew inspiration from action films he loved as a child, referencing such classics as Game of Death, the 1978 Bruce Lee movie, Once Upon A Time In The West (1968), Lady Snowblood (1973), and Fists of Fury, another Bruce Lee classic of 1972. For a really cool montage go here. All those movies are awesome and worth watching on their own.

Quentin Tarantino created a masterpiece, seamlessly blending together several genres and decades of cinema into one cohesive and undeniably engaging piece. The weapons created for the film were unforgettable, and you can have your very own collection. Now you can be ready in case the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad ever comes looking for you. Here are just a few:

Kill Bill Bride Sword Full Tang Battle Ready

The true star of the the entire film, this sword was at the very least Uma Thurman’s costar. Kill Bill 2 – O-ren Ishii Samurai Katana

In the most memorable fight sequence of the decade, Uma Thurman sliced through Oren Ishii’s gang, the Crazy 88, just to have a chance at hand to hand combat with Oren Ishii herself. Now you can own her iconic sword. This unique piece is beautiful, and deadly.

Musashi Kill Bill Budd’s Sword 38 3/4″

The Last Samurai: Swords Beyond Time

The first thing I picture when talking about The Last Samurai is the final scene, the cherry blossoms shaking in the wind as the film comes to its heartbreaking conclusion. I won’t tell you, in case you’ve never seen it. There’s nothing I despise more than a spoiler, and I’m no spoilsport, so you’ll have to watch it to find out what I mean.

If you did see it, you know exactly what I’m talking about. This film is ranked as one of the top 10 samurai films ever made by japancinema.net. Not an easy feat by an American film. In fact, it’s the only American made film on the list.

The story follows Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise), a tortured Civil War veteran hired by the Emperor of Japan to train peasants in modern warfare. By that I mean, like… guns. As in, out with the old, which poses a problem for the Samurai, who are super attached to their traditions (understandably so), yet wish to remain loyal to the Empire. Conflict? You got it.

The story really gets going when Algren is nursed back to health by the Samurai leader Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe) after a skirmish between the Samurai and Algren’s ill-trained soldiers. Extremely well written, the direction and acting on the parts of Cruise and Watanabe are superb. The depiction of common Japanese life in the 1870s is not only accurate, but beautifully portrayed. The fight scenes are simply shot, allowing the viewer to really experience the battles as if they were a spectator.

What else can I say? The movie is really really good. And it so makes me want to go to the backyard and practice with my katanas. After you watch it, you will too. Here are a few possibilities for your collection:

Demigod Katana

This sword is a gorgeous representation of the weapons used by the Samurai. It is 42” long with a 30” blade. It features a hand forged blade, made of high quality carbon steel. The saya is a black lacquered wood, beautiful! It comes with a cleaning kit, and a sword bag, so you can keep it in pristine condition.

Dragon Katana

This is another beautiful example of a sword a Samurai might carry. It is simple in its beauty, but truly packs a punch. The saya has a beautiful dragon detail, perfect for display. It is 39”, with a 27” stainless steel blade, and a cord-wrapped handle for easy gripping.

Masahiro Black Cherry Blossom Katana

Honor Katsumoto’s legacy with this assemble-yourself piece. If you want to really get the full katana experience, assembling the sword yourself connects you to the weapon in a way no pre-assembled item can. It has gorgeous cherry blossoms engraved in the guard. It has a 28 inch high carbon steel blade. It is handmade and extremely sharp, so be careful! It can slice through wire without damaging the blade!

Wanna Be a Samurai?

Anyone who’s ever seen a samurai film spends the rest of the night lying in bed, wishing for their very own samurai sword. We’ve all had dreams where we’re limber ninjas, jumping from roof to roof, sliding undetected behind an unsuspecting target. I mean, that’s the dream, isn’t it? A life of danger and excitement? Then we wake up and simply wobble to the bathroom to start our day.

We sit in our cubicle or desk, daydreaming about slicing through Oren Ishii’s gang, The Crazy 88, like Uma Thurman in Quentin Tarantino’s incredible film Kill Bill. We think back to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and wonder if maybe we trained really hard, perhaps we could hop on bamboo stalks like they did. We imagine decapitating hordes of zombies with our katanas, like that lady on The Walking Dead. No? Just me? Oh…

Let’s face it, every good action film has a samurai sword in there somewhere. They are used as sophisticated and stylish weapons against everything from vampires, to zombies, to enemies against whom we seek revenge. Pretty much any evil, undead, corrupt, oppressive, bad thing out there. And with good reason! They’re awesome.

What if I said there’s a place where you can get the katana of your dreams? A place where they not only sell beautiful display pieces, but battle-ready, handmade amazingness that will surely come in handy when the zombies finally attack. This place exists, and you’re reading its blog right now.

Heavenly Swords has dozens of gorgeous swords for anyone looking to start, or expand their collection. With new products coming in every day, you are guaranteed to find what you’re looking for. Here are a few of my favorites:

Dragon Guardian Samurai Sword w/ White Ito

The intricate dragon detail on the handle is what got my attention. This beauty is 41” long, with a battle ready blade made form 1045 carbon steel. Those zombies are going down!

Gold Jintachi Japanese Samurai Swords

This one is perfect for someone just starting a collection. It’s not only a stunning showpiece, but it comes equipped with a 26” stainless steel blade. The scabbard, or saya, has a gold plated finish, and the handle features a gorgeous antiqued detail.

Gold Spiral Dragon Katana

What put this sword over the top for me are the 7” stiletto and the 7 ½” knife that fit neatly into the scabbard. So you have extra protection if you need to fight off multiple undead at once. The red snakeskin-style handle matches the red scabbard… just so pretty.

Musha Hand Hond Razor Sharp Samurai Sword Set with Stand

For those of us who do not play games. This is a hand forged, razor sharp sword set. Each blade is made of 1045 carbon steel glimmering in the sunlight, my friend. The hard, deep blue scabbard has a lacquered high gloss finish, and the stand compliments it beautifully. Display these in a prominent place, and know you’ll always have some deadly weapons ready if you ever need to defend yourself against The Crazy 88.

Naruto: Weapons Galore!

Naruto first burst into the manga scene in 1997. From there it grew into an anime series of 220 episodes. The animated series debuted in Japan in 2002, and slowly made its way to the Americas, gaining loads and loads of fans in the meantime. It’s become one of the best selling manga series, selling over 126 million copies in Japan alone. Yes, I looked it up on wikipedia.

I mean, the series is awesome. The writers and illustrators have created an intricate and complex world. One that is unique yet relatable, where its characters fight enemies, both external and internal, and struggle to achieve their dreams. All of this set in a fantastic landscape. It’s funny, poignant, heartbreaking and just… really engaging.

The main character is Naruto Uzumaki. Twelve years before we begin our journey with him, a terrifying creature called The Nine-Tailed Demon Fox attacked his village. To defeat this demon, the village leader sealed this monster inside the body of a newborn boy. This boy was Naruto.

Naruto was abused and mistreated his entire childhood because of this, unbeknownst to him. But he is determined to become the village leader someday, so he leaves his home to train to become a ninja. There’s so much more to the story, but I honestly don’t think I’d do it justice. You gotta watch it! You can catch it all on Adult Swim, or online at naruto.viz.com anytime.

Take your Naruto fandom to the next level with these awesome replicas. We have lots of weapons from the series available. Here are just a few:

Red Kunai Warrior Set

Perfectly balanced, this three piece set is made of stainless steel and comes with a durable nylon sheath. Nice and compact, each kunai is about 5 inches long.

Or:

Zabuza Sword and Stand

Become a true Japanese warrior with this massive piece of weaponry. It is 40” long with a 29” stainless steel blade. It comes with a free wood stand, so you can display it with pride. Careful, this is a formidable sword.

Musha Sasuke Uchiha Naruto Anime Sword

Streamlined and gorgeous, you don’t need to be a Naruto fan to appreciate the simple beauty of this item. It has a 27” two-toned carbon steel blade. It is 38” overall with a white wooden handle and matching scabbard. It has a single black stripe running the length of the scabbard and handle, and a red ninja symbol.

Naruto Shippuden Ninja Trench Knife

This super sharp little knife may only be about 9” long, but it has lots of power. It has a stainless steel trailing point blade, and white cotton wrapping around the knuckle guards. Sleek and effective, this knife is indispensable for any ninja warrior. It includes a sturdy sheath and a belt loop.
